Attend the Lopez Village Master Plan Hearing – 9/21

September 21, 10:30 a.m., Lopez Center for Community and the Arts

Attend the joint San Juan County Council and Planning Commission Public Hearing on the final draft of the Lopez Village Sub Area Plan. Please provide your support for the existing strong language on environmental protection and climate change considerations in the subarea plan as well as support for the addition of a marine shoreline specific goal under the natural systems and habitat goals (pages 72 and 73).

In light of current heightened efforts to identify and implement actions in support of Southern Resident Killer Whale recovery, the Lopez Village Plan update provides an additional tool to highlight and advance priority restoration and protection actions that support forage fish and salmon. Examples of the kinds of projects that could occur within the Fisherman Bay subarea include rock removal and beach restoration at the county road end on Weeks Point Way and the voluntary restoration and/or protection of wetland and shoreline habitat through collaborative efforts with private waterfront property owners.

The meeting starts at 10:30 a.m., please click here for the detailed agenda/order of business.

We believe that our property is more valuable if we and our neighbors protect the shoreline. Orcas need salmon. Salmon need forage fish. Salmon and forage fish need the protection of eelgrass and kelp. Eelgrass and kelp need clean water. Shoreline protections are good for ecosystems and for the long-term economy of these lovely islands.
