Building Community to Protect the San Juans and Salish Sea

Friends of the San Juans’ Island Ambassadors are passionate, informed representatives from across the San Juan Islands, playing a vital role in advancing our mission to protect these islands and the Salish Sea.

Currently, ambassadors from Orcas, Shaw, Lopez, Waldron, and San Juan Islands share our mission with their communities, host Meet & Mingles with a Mission, support events and fundraising efforts, inspire islanders to take environmental action, and gather feedback on local environmental needs to help shape our priorities.

Ayn Gailey, our volunteer Lead Ambassador, guides this initiative, working alongside fellow ambassadors and Freinds’ staff to amplify engagement and foster deeper community connections.

Interested in hosting a Meet & Mingle with a Mission at your home, property, or farm? Are you passionate about organizing social events like nature sketching, birdwatching, or beach clean-ups? We welcome ambassadors from every island—including Blakely and Decatur!

If you’d like to get involved in any capacity, please reach out to Lead Ambassador Ayn Gailey at [email protected].

It wasn’t until 1979 that San Juan County got a comprehensive growth plan and that was largely due to the Friends of the San Juan’s being there to advocate for the shoreline and the ecosystem. Since then, there have been constant waves of pressure by developers. Friends have risen each time, fighting to protect this fragile and precious place.
