Help make the San Juan Islands “Plastic Free by the Sea”! This year’s Great Islands Clean-up is on Saturday, April 20, 2019. Join the county-wide greening event and collect litter from public beaches and roadways. There will be litter clean-up events happening on Orcas, San Juan, Lopez and Shaw Islands this year.
Litter picker-uppers will be asked to join the recycling diversion challenge. We are seeing how much of the collected litter can be diverted to recycling. Please help us sort any clean recycled material from your roadside or beach litter. If you have questions about what is recyclable, there will be people on hand to help you at all locations.
Orcas Island: Meet at the Village Green in Eastsound at 10 a.m. to pick-up your trash collection equipment and be assigned a beach or roadway. Be sure to bring back what you collect to the Village Green before 2 p.m. for the great islands diversion challenge.
Lopez Island: Meet before 10 a.m. at the Blossom Grocery Store parking lot to pick up trash collection equipment and receive beach and roadway assignments. Coffee and goodies will be provided to fuel your efforts! Bring your collected trash, separated into recyclables and garbage to the County Public Works shop next to the Lopez Dump on Fisherman Bay Road before 2 p.m. to partake in the great islands diversion challenge!
San Juan Island: Pick-up your trash collection equipment and get your location assignment at the central meet location next to Bonnie’s Creative Passions at 635 Spring Street in Friday Harbor from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is also a drop-in beach clean-up at South Beach via Pickett’s Lane from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Be sure to bring back what you collect to 635 Spring Street for the diversion challenge by 2 p.m.
