Are you looking for a meaningful, flexible way to support local environmental action this summer? Friends of the San Juans is seeking a Communications & Outreach Volunteer to join our team for a two-hour weekly shift, either in our Friday Harbor office or remotely. To help grow our community presence and impact, you’ll work directly with Elise Cope, our Communications and Outreach Director, and Keri, one of Friends’ super volunteers who helps with community outreach.
This is a chance to be part of a small team doing big things for the islands! You’ll help with organizing outreach materials, distributing flyers, reviewing digital engagement, and using creative tools like Canva and Mailchimp to inspire action.
Just ask Keri. When she first volunteered at a Friends’ event, she had no idea it would turn into a six-month opportunity. “I first heard about Friends online, shortly after moving to Friday Harbor,” Keri shared. “Service has always been a core value of mine, and I was looking for meaningful ways to get involved in the local community. I’m grateful to have the chance to apply my own skills locally while continuing to learn and give back to this incredible environment.”
Whether you’re a student, professional, or islander-at-heart, we’d love to have you on board.
This is a great opportunity to:
- Connect with local environmental leaders and changemakers
- Get behind-the-scenes experience with tools like Canva, Adobe Express, Mailchimp, and WordPress
- Support impactful advocacy, science, and education programs
- Stay engaged while enjoying your summer—flexible scheduling included!

"The San Juan Islands are such a special place, and I was drawn to the mission of Friends and was personally looking to get more educated on what I can do locally to protect the Islands. I love the outdoors and have been involved in outdoor activities for most of my life, whether through trail running, hiking, traveling, or volunteer work. I'm excited about the opportunity to contribute locally through my personal skill set, while also learning more about how to protect the special place we call home."
— Keri Bender, a "super volunteer" at Friends!
