Here at Friends we have what we refer to as “super volunteers”—these are folks who contribute talent and expertise to our growth and strategic priorities, going above and beyond the call of duty. They become an extension of staff, amplifying our values and mission.
One such volunteer is Raven Preston of Orcas Island. Raven was first introduced to Friends at a Meet and Mingle event on Orcas in the summer of 2023. After striking up a conversation with our Executive Director, Eva Schulte, it was clear that Raven had an important role to impart with Friends. Focusing on user experience and customer database management, Eva and Raven began to map out a project to help Friends better utilize technology to grow and improve outreach in the community. Fast forward 1 year later, and Raven has volunteered nearly 30 hours to the effort, all remotely from Orcas Island!
We’re beyond grateful to Raven for her support and expertise. Skill-based volunteers like Raven can have a profound impact on local organizations even with just a few hours of focused time.

How did you first hear about Friends of the San Juans, and what prompted you to volunteer?
I first heard about Friends of the San Juans through an Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce newsletter announcing the Meet + Mingle event. My husband and I were new to the island and decided to attend. I decided to volunteer after speaking with Eva. She and the Friends Team were so personable and welcoming. I had planned to volunteer in the community but hadn’t yet decided where. Friends of the San Juans was the first connection I made and their warmth and dedication made it an easy decision for me to get involved.
Why does nature, and our relationship with each other and nature, matter?
Our relationship with each other and nature matters because we are all interconnected—plants, animals, humans, and insects. My well-being is connected not only to the well-being of my community but also to the health of my environment. When we recognize and nurture these connections, we foster a more sustainable and harmonious existence.
Which aspects of Friends’ work most resonates with you? Why is the work of Friends important to you?
The work that resonates with me the most is their ability to defend their stance and get involved in emerging issues affecting the community. The work they do is important to me because I believe the way they protect the community and environment is radical in comparison to other organizations with similar missions. Their proactive approach, willingness to tackle challenging issues head-on, and commitment to standing up for what is right sets them apart. This level of dedication ensures immediate protection for our natural resources and community well-being.
If Friends of the San Juans is effective in achieving its mission, what will the San Juans and Salish Sea look like in 50 years?
When Friends is successful, it will be a case study for community-based sustainability practices, demonstrating how collective efforts and shared resources can lead to significant environmental and social benefits. This success can inspire other communities to adopt similar models, fostering a culture of collaboration and sustainability at a grassroots level. Additionally, it can provide valuable insights into the strategies and approaches that work best for engaging community members, overcoming challenges, and creating lasting positive change.
Our work is place-based. When you think about a “sense of place” in the San Juans and the Salish Sea, what comes to mind for you?
The strong sense of community and the collaborative spirit of the people who live and work here further enhance this unique sense of place. These elements collectively shape my experiences and interactions, making the San Juans and the Salish Sea not just a location, but a vibrant and meaningful home. Preserving the natural environment, honoring the cultural heritage, and fostering community connections are crucial for maintaining the special character of this region for future generations.
