she/her/hers

Sarah Hart is a longtime San Juan Islander with deep roots in local communities and organizations. After teaching photography at an East Coast school for her career, Sarah moved to the Pear Point neighborhood on San Juan Island. Sarah is a champion of environmental causes and cares deeply about respecting and following the leadership of Tribal and Sovereign Nations. A member of Friends since at least 2007, she also donated land on Henry Island to Lummi Nation through the Land Bank (and Friends played a role too). Sarah was previously treasurer of the Board of the San Juan Preservation Trust.

In her own words, Sarah says, “Living on the East coast for 20 years before returning to the NW has given me the opportunity to think about what is truly important to me in the islands. A lot has changed over the past several decades – both for good and bad. Seeing how the coast along New England and the middle Atlantic states has been tragically over developed is a wakeup call for what the future of San Juan County might be. A kayak paddle along the west side today is a very different experience from what it was in the early 70s when I first lived on San Juan. It is wonderful that some stretches have been preserved! I think the work of Friends of the San Juans, The Land Preservation Trust, and the Land Bank has been instrumental in maintaining the islands as a more natural/less commercial environment. I know it is an ongoing challenge as developers are ever ready to turn pristine land into cash. I am fully supportive and appreciative of your continuing efforts to hold the line whenever and wherever you can – recognizing important and possible areas to save and rehabilitate.”

We live in such a pivotal time. Future generations are depending on us to protect and restore what will be their environment. We support the Friends because they tackle the issues that really make a big difference in our local environment, while also squeezing maximum value out of every dollar in their budget.
