Less than 200 years ago, North Pacific right whales thrived in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Then, beginning in 1835 and continuing into the 1970’s, these charismatic animals were intensely targeted by commercial whaling. Today, about thirty North Pacific right whales remain off the coast of North America.

Right Over the Edge was created by Kevin Campion, a filmmaker and founder of Deep Green Wilderness, which takes kids out to sea to learn about science, whales and the Salish Sea. The film follows a team of scientists as they search for the elusive creature and work to understand its behavior and habitat. Campion will be in attendance to introduce the film and answer questions at both upcoming free film screening events.

“We hope that this film will inspire people to care about the North Pacific Right Whale and take action to protect it,” said Kevin Campion, the film’s creator and founder of Deep Green Wilderness, which takes kids out to sea to learn about science, whales and the Salish Sea. “By sharing this story with the public, we hope to raise awareness about the importance of conserving our ocean’s biodiversity.”

North Pacific Right Whales are so rare that even the foremost experts on the species are lucky to see one or two in their lifetime. A comment period to help conserve the species is expected to open up this Spring. Right Over The Edge debuts with the return of SeaDoc Society’s popular Ocean Night series at the SeaView Theatre in Eastsound, Thursday May 18 at 7 pm. The second showing is in partnership with Friends of the San Juans and the San Juan Island Yacht Club in Friday Harbor, Saturday, May 20 at 7:30 pm.

I feel like I have found the home that I could not find anywhere else I have traveled and lived. Thank you, Friends of the San Juans, for protecting all of the islands and the Salish Sea.
