Recycling Reform Act (SB 5284 solid waste management / HB 1150): moving responsibility of plastic production to the producers, taking plastic off our beaches
The Basics
The Recycling Reform Act (SB 5284 Solid waste management, and HB 1150) is a game-changer for Washington, modernizing our outdated recycling system. This bill creates a producer responsibility program in which manufacturers and brands come together to reduce unnecessary packaging and paper, fund statewide recycling services, and ensure that materials are recycled.
How it Helps
- Fewer Plastics in the Water: By incentivizing reductions in plastic packaging, this bill keeps harmful plastics out of our beaches, waterways, and marine ecosystems.
- Healthier Habitats: A cleaner, more sustainable recycling system prevents pollution that endangers marine life like salmon, orcas, and countless other species that call the Salish Sea home.
- Stronger Communities: Statewide recycling services will benefit every household, reduce litter, and improve the resilience of island communities that rely on healthy ecosystems.
The Timeline
This bill will be heard in the Senate Environment, Energy, and Technology Committee on Tuesday, Jan 28, at 1:30 pm. By showing your support, you’ll help ensure the Salish Sea and our vibrant island communities remain clean, thriving, and resilient for generations to come.
