Current Volunteer Opps

We have a number of opportunities and events that you can get involved with this summer! Contact Elise Cope, Communications and Outreach Director, for more information: [email protected]

Event Volunteers, August 6th
Shaw Island, 12 pm to 4 pm

Help us greet, shuttle, and assist guests at our Meet + Mingle event on Shaw Island — a special in-person gathering for Friends members, staff, board, and volunteers to meet, connect, and reunite after this long pause of in-person events. The following volunteers are needed:

  • Shuttle Driver: Volunteers will help drive our walk-on guests to and from the Shaw Ferry Landing to the Shaw Community Center, approximately 1 mile. Van provided. Must have a valid WA State Drivers license and pass a WA State Background Check.
  • Kitchen + Food Helpers (2): Assist our Operations Manager, Jan Sanberg, in prepping, serving, and cleaning up our food and beverage offerings for the event.
  • Meet + Greeter: Welcome people as they arrive and provide name tags!

San Juan County Fair Volunteers, August 17th – 20th

Help us with tabling at the San Juan County Fair! We’ll provide training and support, and you provide community spirit, and a friendly smile!

Local ASL Interpreters

Join our list of American Sign Language interpreters, on-call for virtual or in-person events. Event timing will range. We will add you to our interest list and send an email out as opportunities arise.

Local Spanish Interpreters

Join our list of Spanish interpreters, on-call for virtual or in-person events, or to translate written materials to make education and outreach more accessible for our island communities.

Boat Hosts

Would you consider using your own boat to transport Friends staff for inter-island restoration projects? Or perhaps host a small group for an educational eco-tour? Friends provides the fuel, and in some instances a licensed captain, and you provide the boat! Opportunities are available for both sail and motor boats. Must pass a WA State Background Check and application process. If interested, we will add your name to our interest list and send an email out as opportunities arise.

Farmers Market Stewards

Are you passionate about environmental stewardship in the San Juan Islands and Salish Sea? We are seeking volunteers interested in collaborating with staff to expand knowledge of Friends’ programs and projects via tabling at farmers markets and other events throughout the islands. Ideal candidates are eager to connect and talk with other community members and are willing to engage in “agenda-free” conversations on local environmental issues. You do not need to have all the answers or be intimately involved with Friends’ work—we’ll provide training and support, and you provide community spirit, an open mind, and a friendly smile!

Annual Meeting Event Volunteers
October 1, Orcas Island, 10 am to 1 pm

Help us at Odd Fellows Hall on Orcas Island with event set-up, serving Covid-conscious pre-packaged charcuterie, and event clean-up. You’ll have the opportunity to be inspired by some fabulous speakers and connect with informed and passionate stewards of the San Juans.

It wasn’t until 1979 that San Juan County got a comprehensive growth plan and that was largely due to the Friends of the San Juan’s being there to advocate for the shoreline and the ecosystem. Since then, there have been constant waves of pressure by developers. Friends have risen each time, fighting to protect this fragile and precious place.
